It finally happened! Yours truly has been upgraded. Candi, a Latinx romance novel by Sujeiry Gonzalez about yours truly (yes, this is Candi) has been gifted a brand-spanking new book cover!
I received the call from Sujeiry while meditating in my closet. I needed the R&R and comfort of my shoes after learning that a gringa booked the role of Maria in the off-off-off Broadway musical, West Side Story. She can’t belt how I can; I stood outside the door of Ripley’s Studios, dissecting every note that flew out of her tiny mouth. But she controlled her vocal runs and breath like a pro.
I still struggle with it. I’ve sung all of my life; I’m a natural! But I’ve never taken vocal lessons. Unless you count that time I purchased a Groupon from a vocal coach who turned out to be a faux producer turned faux vocal coach. My best friend, Yo, warned me.
“Babe. I better not catch you on the news because you went to some ‘producers’ Brooklyn apartment. I’m too busy to rescue you.”
Of course, I didn’t listen. What if it turned out to be an amazing experience? I’m nothing but a risk-taker and an optimist. Yo…not so much. So I hopped on the 1 train on 181st Street, transferred to the 2 train on 96th Street, got off on Flatbush Avenue, hopped on a Dollar Van, and ended up in a Brooklyn basement with Jamal and his keyboard. Jamal couldn’t hold a note to save his life, but at least I proved Yo wrong and made it out alive.
Do you see why I needed an upgrade? Despite Joel and Yo comforting me with my favorite bagels and the largest bottle of Fireball I’ve ever seen, your girl desperately needed a self-esteem boost. A new cover for my self-titled Latinx romance novel makes me feel like the star that I know I am! I mean, I went from this….
